On June 19, 2026 at 1.50 p.m., at the Agrarajakumari Building, Chulabhorn Hospital, Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana graciously granted an audience to Clinical Prof. Emeritus Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., Chairman of Mahidol University Council, and delegation, to humbly present to Her Royal Highness an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry for the academic year 2024.

Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana, in Her capacity as President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), established the CRI with the aim of applying science and technology to elevate people’s quality of life, and developing the nation’s medical sciences and public health, especially in addressing the health issues involving cancer as people still have difficulty accessing effective drugs.  Her Royal Highness recognizes the expediency and necessity for Thailand to develop competency in drug self-reliance on par with international standards and the ability to effectively apply drugs for patient treatment.

Under Her Royal Initiative, a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility was established under the Chulabhorn Royal Academy.  It is the first facility in Thailand to produce drugs for cancer treatment.  It is also accredited to the international GMP PIC/S standard, which will reduce the costs of importing drugs and increase opportunities for people to have equal and sustainable access to quality drugs for cancer treatment across the board.  Her Royal Highness decided on the production of targeted cancer therapies, highly effective drugs that can be used to treat various types of cancer, including Thailand’s first domestically produced targeted cancer therapy under the name “IMCRANIB 100”.

Furthermore, the President of the CRI is committed to laying the foundation for the “Ecosystem of Biologics Development”, resulting in the establishment of the “Center for Biologics Research and Development (CBRD)”, CRI, to support comprehensive processes of research, development, and production of biologics.  This has led to the successful development of a “trastuzumab” biosimilar, a targeted cancer therapy used to treat various types of cancer, especially breast cancer.  It is considered one of the innovations representing advances in current cancer treatment.  It was also granted a drug registration license by the Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Public Health, under the name “HERDARA”, graciously bestowed by Her Royal Highness Herself.

In addition, during the outbreak of the COVID-19, the President of the CRI conducted research with researchers at the CRI and succeeded in synthesizing the Molnupiravir within six months.  Her Royal Highness graciously bestowed the technology on the government to scale up for industrial production, benefiting people across the nation.

In recognition of Her Royal Highness’s competence in the field of medical sciences and Her perseverance in dedicating Herself to research and development of pharmaceutical sciences and public health, thereby greatly elevating the quality of life and enhancing the happiness of the Thai people, the Mahidol University Council made a unanimous decision to present to the President of the CRI an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry.
