Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), has tirelessly committed Herself to the development and creation of knowledge through study, research, academic work, and modern innovation.  This is achieved through quality study and research processes on par with international standards and a consistent focus on promoting the health and quality of life of the Thai people.  In January 2025, Her Royal Highness made a Royal Visit to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany.  The DKFZ has had a long-standing collaboration with the CRI through Her Royal Highness’s ongoing research, academic work, and visits to observe cutting-edge research activities in parallel with efficient cancer treatment.

Prof. Dr. Michael Baumann, Chair of the Management Board and Chair of the Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center, along with executives, were in attendance to welcome Her Royal Highness.

On this occasion, Her Royal Highness delivered an address on the relationship and cooperation between the two Institutes in their efforts to produce personnel in research, innovation, and medicine with expertise at the international level.

“It is my great pleasure to have the opportunity to visit the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) again with teams of the Chulabhorn Royal Academy and the Chulabhorn Research Institute.  In my capacity as President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, I have initiated a long-term collaboration with the DKFZ for over 30 years for advanced research and human resource development.  Since then, scientists from the DKFZ have made regular visits to the Chulabhorn Research Institute for cooperation in research and academic works, as well as lecturing and training of researchers at the Institute.  Therefore, this is an opportune time for all of us who are gathering here today to expand our cooperation which will greatly enhance the understanding and invention of new and better methods for cancer treatment”.

Another important Royal Duty during the visit to the Federal Republic of Germany was the Royal signing and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Chulabhorn Royal Academy, an agency under Her Royal Highness’s initiative, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).  This is the second time the Memorandum of Agreement has been jointly signed to expand cooperation for the next 5 years. It comprises exchange of knowledge and information, joint studies and research, academic collaboration, curriculum development, exchange of lecturers and students, and sending students to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees.  The aim is to develop medical personnel equipped with skills in modern research and innovation, as well as advanced technology transfer in the field of cancer and combined with other fields, which will be applied to and beneficial for the treatment of patients across the board.  The DKFZ expressed its delight and preparedness to cooperate in every possible way to enhance the Thai people’s quality of life, fulfilling Her Royal Highness’s noble intention.

At the same time, Her Royal Highness attended a briefing on the accomplishments of academic and research work on childhood cancer, as well as studies in applied bioinformatics for analyzing blood samples of cancer patients.  This activity aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange and further expand cooperation in research, education, and exchange of students and personnel between the two Institutes.

Afterwards, Her Royal Highness visited the drug research laboratory at the DKFZ.  The laboratory conducts research and development of new treatment methods, as well as drug testing to identify the most effective treatments for children with cancer who do not respond to current standard therapies.

Her Royal Highness took great interest in the potential of drug development and methods of cancer treatment in children at the DKFZ.  This interest is in alignment with Her Royal Highness’s commitment to ensuring drug security through the use of science and technology, enabling patients to have access to drugs that are comprehensive and responsive to cancer treatment efficiently.

Her Royal Highness’s academic visit represents a vital mission to strengthen networks of cooperation with world-leading educational and research institutions.  The goal is to generate new knowledge and apply it to personnel development in professions facing shortages, especially medical personnel, nurses, and scientists, with the ultimate aim of enhancing the Thai people’s quality of life as well as their health and hygiene.
