the Closing Ceremony of
the 9th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress

On December 18, 2024 at 3.55 p.m., Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, presided over the closing ceremony of the 9th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress under the theme “The Challenges of One Health: The Roles of Biosciences and Chemistry”.  The Congress was held to honor His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s 72nd Birthday Anniversary on July 28, 2024.  This important International Congress focused on the key roles of biosciences and chemistry and the solutions to overcome the challenges of “One Health” based on the concept of the World Health Organization (WHO).  This concept and the methods to address health issues are new, integrating human, animal health and the environment, leading to the comprehensive promotion of good health and enabling all creatures on earth to live together in safety and security.  The event was held from December 15-18, 2024 at Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok.

On this occasion, Her Royal Highness graciously granted the Princess Chulabhorn Gold Medal Award of Appreciation to six recipients as follows:

1. Dr. Norbert Frank, Federal Republic of Germany

An academic who has been a long-standing benefactor of and collaborator with the Chulabhorn Research Institute in organizing study courses in the international and Asia-Pacific training programs at the Institute and in master’s and doctoral degree programs at the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute. Dr Frank also serves as a coordinator between the Chulabhorn Research Institute and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in research and the development of research personnel with the Federal Republic of Germany.

2. Dr. Curtis C. Harris, USA

A key researcher who initiated cooperation, support, and implementation of the project “Thailand’s Initiative in Genomics and Expression Research for Liver Cancer (TIGER-LC)”, a Royal Initiative Project addressing public health issues in Thailand, and has continuously contributed to the development of researchers at the Chulabhorn Research Institute in cancer study and research.

3. Professor Leonard Ritter, Canada

An academic who has been a long-standing benefactor of and collaborator with the Chulabhorn Research Institute in organizing courses of study in international and Asia-Pacific training programs at the Institute and in master’s and doctoral degree programs at the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute.

4. Professor Martin van den Berg, the Netherlands

An academic who has continuously supported and cooperated in organizing courses of study in international and Asia-Pacific training programs at the Chulabhorn Research Institute and in master’s and doctoral degree programs at the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute.

5. Dr. Xin Wei Wang, USA

One of the researchers at the US National Cancer Institute, responsible for the project “Thailand’s Initiative in Genomics and Expression Research for Liver Cancer (TIGER-LC)” since 2009.  Dr. Xin Wei Wang has also continuously supported the development of the capabilities of Chulabhorn Research Institute’s researchers in cancer study and research.

6. Thanphuying Putrie Viravaidya, Thailand

A key figure who plays a major role in education, youth development, and promotion of public health in Thailand.  Thanphuying has been a benefactor of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, responsible for protocols at every Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress since 1987.

The Princess Chulabhorn Gold Medal Award of Appreciation was established with the Royal Permission of the President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute to applaud and honor individuals or institutions with outstanding academic work, contributions to organizing courses of study in collaboration with the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), or those who have long dedicated their time and expertise for the operations of the CRI, or those who have long supported and promoted research and academic work of the CRI, enabling the CRI to reach the target of building personnel with knowledge and expertise in the fields necessary to the country’s sustainable development and elevation of people’s quality of life, leading to the CRI’s successful activities which have been evident and internationally recognized up till the present.

Afterwards, the President of the CRI delivered an address at the closing ceremony of the 9th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress.  An excerpt of the address is as follows:

“…This Congress has met with success through the presentation of high-quality work and discussions of each lecture topic which reflect immense interests from the participants.  Furthermore, the presentations of research and focus group meetings demonstrate that the objectives of organizing the Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress have been met as the Congress provides the opportunity for scientists around the world to exchange opinions, experience, and research work, the results of which will be used in scientific development benefiting the whole mankind…”

The Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress is one of Thailand’s major international science conferences and has been held every 4-5 years since 1987.  The main content of each Congress varies and changes in line with the latest academic advancement in the world.  This year, the Congress reflects Her Royal Highness’s great vision and ability to direct science and technology work to keep abreast of current global changes. This has been implemented through Her Royal Highness’s policy, which emphasizes encouraging participation of scientists and academics in various fields in the endeavor and cooperation related to research study, information dissemination, exchange of knowledge, experience, and advancements of research in line with the “One Health” concept, as well as development and networking to foster cooperation between interdisciplinary professions, notably doctors, veterinarians, and scientists in related fields around the world, toward sustainable promotion of the “One Health” concept.
