On December 17, 2024 at 12.49 p.m., Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulaborn Research Institute (CRI), graciously delivered a special lecture titled “Protecting Animal and Human Lives from Rabies Project: One Health Approach for Rabies Control and Elimination in Thailand” at the 9th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress.  The event was held in the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok.

The main points of Her Royal Highness’s lecture were greatly beneficial in fostering cooperation to address the rabies-related issues in Thailand and around the world.  Rabies is a serious zoonotic disease, caused by the rabies virus in all species of mammals and currently has no cure.  The disease is fatal if infected individuals are not treated promptly.  The President of the CRI is deeply concerned about rabies as a significant public health issue in Thailand. HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies” has been in operation since 2016 under the “One Health” concept.  It aims to integrate cooperation among relevant agencies through the eight core strategies, involving animal health, human health, disease surveillance, prevention, and control of rabies, legal frameworks, public awareness campaigns and community engagement, aiming to reach the target of the World Health Organization to eradicate rabies in Thailand and around the world by 2030.

It also emphasizes disease prevention in animals, sterilization of dogs and cats, systematic management of people-owned pet population, improvement of the disease surveillance system, and community engagement.  Initial results have demonstrated the success of the project in establishing some rabies-free areas in Thailand with a growing trend toward expansion at the national level.  The integrated implementation of HRH Princess’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies” reflects the effectiveness of the “One Health” concept in addressing the issues of zoonotic diseases.  It serves as a model for efficient rabies control and prevention in other countries, and contributes to building a sustainable rabies-free future.

The 9th Princess Chulabhorn International Science Congress under the theme “The Challenges of One Health: The Roles of Biosciences and Chemistry” was held from December 15-18, 2024 to honor His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s 72nd Birthday Anniversary on July 28, 2024.  This International Science Congress focused on promoting and enhancing the capabilities of professionals in science, medicine, public health, and veterinary medicine to understand the role and significance of the advanced research on “One Health” concept.  The goal was to ensure that the personnel could efficiently apply the knowledge to the maximum benefit of all humankind.  At present, the concept is used to develop and integrate knowledge across interdisciplinary professions including medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental health.  The Congress provided an opportunity for the world’s leading scientists, including Thai scientists, to exchange ideas, experiences, and cooperation, while learning from each other’s progress through latest research and academic work in the fields of science and technology to develop capability and enhance on knowledge, leading to the promotion of good health and well-being of all creatures in the future.  This reflects the strong commitment of the President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute to applying advanced science and technology to elevate people’s quality of life, paving the way for sustainable national development.
