On October 19, 2024, by Royal Command of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), Mr. Piamsak Milintachinda, Vice President for International Relations of the CRI, presided over the opening ceremony of the Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities. This Project, which is part of the strategy of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies” implemented since 2017, integrates operations of all relevant sectors under the “One Health” concept of the World Health Organization. It serves as a guideline to address health issues related to human and animal health and the environment in an integrated manner to foster good health and safe coexistence. The event was held at the Paradiso JK Design Hotel, Mueang District, Nakhon Sawan Province.

The project was organized through the cooperation between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, and the support of relevant agencies in Nakhon Sawan Province, such as Provincial Livestock Office, Provincial Public Health Office, and provincial offices in the local areas, etc. The project’s aim was to promote knowledge and understanding of the management to address rabies issues at the community level. It focused on transfer of knowledge and advanced technology to local public health officials and volunteers through activities to promote knowledge and skills in enhancing efficient and concrete prevention and control of rabies, such as academic lectures, a workshop on the use of applications to prevent rabies in schools and communities, demonstrations of first aid techniques and proper treatment procedures following dog bites, knowledge transfer of rabies using a game-based Q&A, as well as relevant legal provisions on the prevention and control of rabies. Approximately 140 participants attended, comprising livestock officials, public health officials, health education teachers, and village health volunteers.

Nakhon Sawan Province has been identified as a key target area for the operation of the Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities, through campaigns to promote knowledge and proper practical methods to secure safety from rabies. In the fiscal year 2024, 1,810 dogs and cats were sterilized and vaccinated against rabies, in over 143 areas in the Province.

This integrated training project constitutes an important mechanism in the efforts to rally social forces to build rabies-free communities, fulfilling the intention of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol. With Her visionary leadership, Her Royal Highness is determined to promote good health and hygiene of people as well as pets and stray, homeless animals to genuinely elevate and develop the quality of life of all Thai people.
