Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities in Suphan Buri Province

On July 13, 2024, by Royal Command of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), Mr. Chalit Manityakul, Vice President for International Relations of the CRI, presided over the opening ceremony of the Project on Integrated Training for Knowledge Dissemination and Technology Transfer on the Management of Rabies to Communities, at Vasidtee City Hotel, Mueang Suphan Buri District, Suphan Buri Province. Her Royal Highness realizes the importance of addressing rabies, a major public health issue in the country, which necessitates urgent action to achieve the goal of the Project “Humans and animals are safe from rabies in a sustainable manner”. The Project fostered cooperation among relevant sectors, including the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, Suphan Buri Provincial Public Health Office, and Suphan Buri Provincial Livestock Office, etc. The aim was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge on animal health, human health, and the efficient management of dog issues in communities. Additionally, a network was established to support future rabies prevention efforts in these communities.

Core activities of the training comprised academic lectures and a workshop on using applications to prevent rabies in schools and communities, demonstrations of rabies prevention methods, first aid procedures for animal bites, and an overview of laws and regulations related to the prevention and control of rabies. Approximately 160 participants attended, including livestock officials, public health officials from local administrative organizations, health education teachers, village health volunteers, and community representatives.

Suphan Buri Province is a target area for the operations of the Integrated Training Project. The Suphan Buri Provincial Office has undertaken to monitor, prevent, and control rabies, and has continuously provided trainings for local livestock volunteers in line with HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s project on “Disease-free Animals, Safe Humans from Rabies” in order to campaign and promote local participation and awareness of the danger of rabies. Suphan Buri Province reportedly has a dog and cat population of 90,121, with 1,000 sterilized, and 2,250 vaccinated against rabies. Moreover, the Province hosts two shelters that can accommodate and systematically care for local stray dogs, one located in Mueang Suphan Buri District, and the other in U Thong District.

These activities contribute to the development of personnel potential, promote knowledge and understanding of effective dog management in communities, and the proper methods for preventing the spread of rabies to ensure that all areas in Thailand are sustainably rabies-free, in alignment with Her Royal Highness’s vision.
